I've changed the format of this site to make it a bit easier to follow what is happening.

IT'S IN!!!!!  (Well most of it anyway).

SUPERCHARGER INSTALL 10/16/2004

The Project:
Having decided to replace the Sebring (JR) supercharger (it had 85,000 miles on it) with the new "Flyin Miata"  "Ubercharger," I also decided that the engine was getting a little tired as well and needed be freshened up a bit.
Engine work:

  • Rebore cylinders to 84.5 mm (an increase of 1.5mm or .060). 1907 cc
  • Regrind Crankshaft.
  • Lighten flywheel by 3 lbs.
  • Install "Carrillo" beam high performance rods. (each 1/4# less than stock).
  • Install "Wiseco" high performance pistons (8.7:1 cr). (each 1/4# less than stock).
  • Install "Clevite 77" performance rod and main bearings.
  • Polish head exhaust ports.
  • Match head exhaust ports to header
  • Complete 3 angle valve job including guide and seal replacement.
  • Replace all gaskets and seals with Mazda OEM parts.
  • Replace oil pump.
  • Remove Water Injection (it will not be needed with the intercooler).
  • Remove Air conditioning system (weight saving).
  • Pressure clean entire engine bay.
  • Remove or reroute many wires (clean up the bay).
  • Reinstall theengine
  • Install the new Supercharger
  • Install the intercooler.

The end result (hopefully):
  • Increase displacement to 1907.1 CC (1.9 liters).
  • Safely Increase rev limit to 8000/8500 rpm  (Bullitt proof bottom end).
  • Reduce the revolving mass weight by 5 lbs (lighter flywheel, rods and pistons) creating faster throttle response.
  • Increase boost pressure from 13psi to 20+ psi.
  • Increase hp from 203 to 250+ (at the wheels--275-300 at the flywheel).
  • Increase torque from 170 ft lbs to 220 ft lbs.
  • Buy a lot of new tires ;).

Day 1.   9/24/2004:
Removed the Supercharger, intake, and various other bits and pieces.
Next is the manifold, fuel rail and fuel lines, and that will complete the SC removal.

TIP:  When removing or disconnecting wires, hoses, lines etc; always label them. Write down absolutely everything you do, even the most trivial. Bag small parts.

Day 3.

Did some rewiring, wire removal and general engine bay cleanup.

Tranny removed.

UPS & FEDEX brought some goodies!

Cabinet shop????

I am at a standstill for the moment. The Engine is still at the machinist and we are waiting on bearings, gasket set and oil pump.

For those of you who are not club members this might be of interest. I am purchasing all of the replacement parts such as gaskets, seals, oil pump and whatever other OEM (Miata) parts I need through Kiefer Mazda. Being a member of the club, I get a 20% discount. This has so far totaled over $100.00 in savings just on the gaskets and oil pump. That in and of itself is a good reason to join the club.

To be continued

Some progress, I think? 10/6/2004
(The Ubercharger is on its way, should be here Tuesday or Wednesday.
The Engine is supposed to be in my hands on Friday? If all this happens the car should be up and running by the end of next week.

I made the decision to remove the air conditioning. I hardly ever use it (once in three years) and the weight savings is significant.
